Explore the mysteries overhead with local stories, historical research, and fascinating accounts over the years right here in Orange County.
Local investigator Jim Cooper describes himself as “UFO curious”. His scientific training makes him careful about claims that outrun the evidence, but he’s genuinely interested in the history of people reporting things in the sky, that they could not readily explain—particularly when those reports come from trained observers such as pilots, military personnel and police.
Instances like in 1965, when California highway engineer Rex Heflin saw disk-shaped craft as he was traveling near the blimp hangars in Tustin when his radio quit. Heflin took a variety of photos to document his viewing.
Cooper will cover the history of UFO sightings in the Orange County area, particularly those that cannot easily be dismissed as ball lightning, swamp gas, or the planet Venus, and those witnessed by expert observers (airmen, pilots, police, engineers and scientists). He will cover a selection of sightings in the Orange County area, and focus on one famous event that has been the subject of much debate.
Besides researching unexplained aerial phenomenon, Cooper works at UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz, where he teaches innovation to graduate students. Outside work, he coaches the Orange County Giants, the local Australian Football club—a sport played by people who regard helmets, sleeves and clearly defined positions as unnecessary complications.
This Night at the Museum meeting will be held on Friday, September 25, from 7 to 8:30 pm at the Tustin Area Museum, 395 El Camino Real in Downtown Tustin. Tickets are $20 per person and $15 each for members, and $10 if you come dressed as a Space alien.
