Diving into Tustin’s early bar scene
Step back into the smoky lounges, neighborhood taverns, and legendary watering holes that helped shape Tustin’s past.
Local researcher and historian Taylor Hadden shares how for generations; local bars, taverns, lounges, and restaurants served as far more than places to eat and drink. They were gathering spots where friendships were formed, business deals were made, celebrations were held, and community history unfolded.
Hadden will explore some of Tustin’s most memorable establishments, including the Ranch House, Swinging Door, Safari Room, Walnut Room, Tustin Inn, Newport 5, and Zeb’s Boathouse.
Drawing from archival research, historic newspapers, photographs, interviews, and public records, Hadden traces the evolution of these businesses and the people who built, operated, and frequented them.
The presentation reveals how changing social attitudes, local politics, military influences, economic development, crime, and community traditions shaped Tustin’s nightlife and hospitality culture throughout the twentieth century.
Along the way, attendees will encounter colorful characters, surprising controversies, forgotten landmarks, and stories that connect directly to the city’s broader history.
Taylor Hadden is a researcher with the Tustin Area Historical Society whose work focuses on preserving and documenting overlooked stories from Orange County’s past. His recent research has explored local businesses, aviation history, agriculture, military communities, and the people whose lives helped shape Tustin and the surrounding region.
This Night at the Museum meeting will be held on Friday, August 28, from 7 to 8:30 pm at the Tustin Area Museum, 395 El Camino Real in Downtown Tustin. Tickets are $20 per person and $15 each for members
